Princess Diana's pearls and pie-crust collars were largely replaced with sharp-shouldered blazers and cocktail dresses in the Nineties. And it's this decade which will provide the setting of the first half of season six of The Crown. Elizabeth Debicki is returning as Princess Diana, who starts the new series on holiday in St Tropez - and the promo shots that have already dropped ahead of tomorrow's release would suggest that the show's costume designer duo, Amy Roberts and Sidonie Roberts, have taken a forensic approach to recreating certain outfits that will no doubt be remembered by many royal fans. As to how the on-screen looks - of Diana's, as well as Prince Charles, William, Harry and the Queen - compare to real life, keep scrolling to see the outfits that have been referenced in the next series below.

This Catherine Walker shift dress, complete with a double-buckle waist belt, was masterfully recreated for this series of The Crown. (And they even managed to imitate her curved gold clip-ons to perfection.)

Prince Charles (as he was then) with his sons, William and Harry, who spent part of their summer holiday at Balmoral. As you can see, The Crown's version is a very near match. Apart from the colours of the kilt and sporran, it's like playing a game of spot the difference.

This Gottex swimsuit has actually been re-released by the brand who made the original back in the '90s - and is available to buy in a limited run of 250 cosies.

Princess Diana's funeral features in the first half of this series, for which the costume designers reimagined this rather sombre dress coat worn with a respectfully unshowy string of pearls for the Queen.
In the last series of The Crown, Debicki's outfits were also copied-and-pasted from the wardrobe of Diana (with yet another recreation of a dress designed by Catherine Walker).
And what about season four?

For her engagement announcement to Prince Charles, Diana wore a deep blue dress – which many compare to the dress Kate Middleton, which was from Issa, wore for her engagement announcement to Prince William – with a white-and-blue patterned scarf. The Crown's costume department got it spot on.

In June 1981, Princess Diana wore a stunning red Bellville Sassoon dress to the premiere of the Bond film For Your Eyes Only, which looks like the inspiration for this look from The Crown.
