What is it about Parisian women’s style that is so covetable to the rest of us? The city's inhabitants possess an air of effortlessness that we could only long to achieve. Perhaps it’s their elegantly non-styled hair? Maybe it’s their ability to throw together an exquisitely-chic outfit without so much as a second thought? After all, despite hailing from one of the world’s fashion capitals, French women's style tends not to be dictated by trends. Instead, they choose to focus their attention on a small and curated selection of classic, well-fitting pieces that go beyond what’s simply in fashion now. It could be to do with their sartorial heritage, featuring a line-up of fashion greats including Coco Chanel, Francois Hardy, Caroline de Maigret and Jeanne Damas. Either way, whatever je ne sais quois these women possess - we want it by the bottle.
While the secrets of true French women style remain a mystery, we may have found a way to make sense of it all with a little help from none other than one of Paris's most stylish exports, Carine Roitfeld.
Who is Carine Roitfeld? If chic were a person, she would be it. The French editor (formerly of Vogue Paris) and founder of the iconic CR Fashion Book is one the most influential women in the industry, known the world over not only for her many professional and creative accolades, but for her signature style. Hardly a surprise given her styling background. Simple, succinct and immaculately turned out, Carine is the ultimate embodiment of French style principles. Her trademark (and predominantly all-black) wardrobe - consisting of a slinky silk or sheer blouse, a leather pencil skirt, sharp heels and a hint of animal print - has long inspired a generation of Francophiles and now, thanks to her newly-released collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld’s namesake brand, it’s never been so easy to emulate.

Carine was a friend and long time collaborator with Karl during his lifetime, and now their partnership continues following her recent appointment as KARL LAGERFELD’s Style Advisor. Her first task in her new role? To create the capsule collection, KARL ACCORDING TO CARINE. “Before Karl passed, he asked me to make this capsule collection,” says Roitfeld. “He saw the first ideas and he liked it, so I was blessed.”

The collection is a masterclass in how to dress like Carine. Styles are rooted in shades of black with the odd flash of hot fuchsia, whilst the silhouettes are inspired by the essentials hanging in her own wardrobe. Sharp tuxedo jackets sit alongside louche blouses, and, of course, Carine’s insignia, pencil skirts. Hell, there’s even hoodies and t-shirts with Carine’s face on. But there’s a distinctive air of Karl present within the collection too - he was, in fact, the photographer of said portrait whilst the supersize fur coats and K-icon tote - a nod to his trademark high-collar - adhere to his house style codes.

We thought the satin corsets we wore as teens would never again see the light of day, but they're all over the 'gram right now. This is how you do it the grown up way.

There's definitely more than one black dress hanging in Carine's closet, but with the silky satin print and elegantly fluid skirt, this one captures her style best.

Carine Roitfeld? Approving a colour other than black? We never thought we'd see the day, and that's exactly why we're hooked. With the addition of (faux) fur - a Karl signature - and a cinch waist, this piece feels like a real coming together of the two creative minds.

French women don't play by the rules, so why should you? Ditch your usual party frock for the masculine allure of a tuxedo jacket, paired with tailored trousers and your sharpest stilettos.

A classic turtleneck with a flourish - how very français. The detailed sleeves on this black polo top are understated but feel so elevated. Tuck into wide leg strides or a fitted pencil skirt for any easy office uniform.

The playful dégradé leopard print gives a stylish update to the classic pencil skirt shape without straying too far from Carine's core style principles.

This playful sweater, featuring a statement print of Carine Roitfeld's piercing gaze, is a must-have for super fans and a playful take on graphic knits for the rest of us.

Now this fluffy delight may not immediately strike you as a French girl classic, but it's the perfect accessory to accentuate something more understated. Add to a simple black sheer blouse and trouser combination for an effortless party look that packs a punch. Too much? It's also available in a classic black, which is equally magnifique.
